Beginners Group Workshop
This is a great opportunity to gather together to learn the basics of carving a simple cooking spoon with knives and gouges using a blank that I’ve pre-prepared.
Here you will learn the art of whittling- knife grips and techniques, reading the wood and working with the grain, safe working methods, and all the tips and tricks to be able to carve an axed out spoon. You'll also get detailed instructions on finishing and all you need to finish your spoon at home (including sandpaper if needed and oil).
Group size is maximum 5 people to ensure everyone gets attentive guidance and you'll be using the same high-level tools I use for my own carving.
At the end of the day you’ll go home with a spoon carved with your own hands and the skills to continue your carving journey. It’s an immensely satisfying feeling and a process that is fun and an exercise in patience and mindfulness.
If you love it and want to go deeper, follow-up workshops on axing out a blank can be held in the future. You will also be able to buy blanks from me to keep up your whittling at home with just a straight and hook knife.

One-on-ones (or 2-1 for friends & family) for anybody that would like to learn the art of spoon carving on a deeper level than making a one-off.
The one-on-one would include:
- How to source branches suitable for carving and reading the wood
- How to axe out the rough shape of your spoon
- Carving using a selection of knives and gouges - my methods
- How to dry and finish your spoon
- Oil and sandpaper if needed to finish your spoons at home once they’ve slowly dried.
- Many tips and tricks to ensure a long lasting and successful finished spoon each time, as well as keeping yourself safe while carving
- Stropping and sharpening guidance
- Gloves, leather bib and use of all tools
- Ongoing support with your carving journey and resources
It will be a full day, approximately 6 hours or so, and require some strength, perseverance, concentration and patience. It’s also a lot of fun, immensely satisfying and a meditative act to carve, but be prepared for some sore muscles and fingers!
If this sounds like something you’re interested in, the investment is $250 for 1-1 or $200 each if you’re bringing a friend or family member.
It will be a relaxed affair carving together in my backyard (outdoor workshop) in Thirroul.
BYO snacks and lunch, tea and coffee will be provided.
